Sugar-Free Electrolyte Powder: What to Look For
Half the powders marketed as "clean hydration" are mostly sugar, filler, and flavor. Here is how to read the label yourself, and where MNRLZ lands on each point.
A good sugar-free electrolyte powder has 0 g of sugar, a real sodium dose matched to how much you sweat (roughly 200–1,000 mg per serving), potassium and magnesium alongside it, a non-nutritive sweetener such as stevia instead of cane sugar or maltodextrin, and a label that discloses actual amounts rather than hiding behind a proprietary blend. What "sugar-free" actually means on a label
Sugar-free is a regulated claim: under FDA labeling rules, a product carrying it must contain less than 0.5 g of sugar per serving. That part is trustworthy. What is not regulated is the impression the front of the tub creates.
Two things routinely slip past people:
- Carbohydrate is not the same as sugar. Maltodextrin and dextrose are starch-derived carbohydrates. Dextrose is literally glucose and shows up on the sugar line; maltodextrin often does not, despite digesting fast enough to behave like one.
- Per-serving math. A "5 g sugar" tub sounds moderate until you notice the serving is half a stick and most people use two.
Flip to the ingredient panel, which is ordered by weight. If the first ingredient is anything other than a mineral, an acid, or a flavor system, you are buying mostly filler.
How much sodium do you actually need per serving?
Sodium is the electrolyte lost in the largest quantity through sweat, and it is the one that matters most for retaining the water you drink. Sweat sodium concentration varies widely between people — research on athletes generally reports a range of roughly 200 to 2,000 mg of sodium per liter of sweat, with about 1 g per liter as a common midpoint.
That variation is why hydration powders span such a wide dosing range:

Higher is not automatically better. If you are not sweating much, a 1,000 mg serving is simply a lot of sodium against a daily intake most people already exceed. Match the dose to the day.
Potassium and magnesium: the two most commonly shorted
Sodium gets the headlines because it is the cheapest and most impactful ingredient. Potassium and magnesium are more expensive and more often present in token amounts — a 10 mg dusting exists only so the ingredient can appear on the panel.
Look for potassium in the hundreds of milligrams and magnesium in a form that dissolves and absorbs reasonably, such as magnesium malate, citrate, or glycinate. Magnesium oxide is cheap and poorly absorbed.
Sweeteners: stevia, monk fruit, sucralose
Removing sugar means something has to carry the sweetness. The three you will see most:
- Stevia leaf extract — plant-derived, zero calorie, the default for clean-label brands. Some people notice a slight bitter finish.
- Monk fruit — plant-derived, zero calorie, rounder taste, more expensive, frequently blended with stevia.
- Sucralose — synthetic, extremely stable, very cheap, the most common choice in mass-market sports nutrition.

Does going zero sugar cost you anything?
